How Your Habits Help Me Feel Safe When You're Gone

Dear Human,

Let’s address the squeaky toy in the room: I know when you’re leaving.

You grab your keys. You spritz that perfume. You don’t put on joggers. And then — worst of all — you say, “Back soon!” like I can tell time. (Spoiler: I can’t.)

I’m your loyal sidekick, sock snuggler, and Good Habits Club life member. And today, we’re talking about a ruff one: separation anxiety — and how your daily habits can help me stay calm when you head out into the big world without me (how dare you).

From My Bed Under the Window…

Separation anxiety isn’t about being dramatic. It’s about not knowing if you’re coming back. Some of us get shaky. Some bark. Some re-enact a full Greek tragedy. Me? I redecorate with throw pillows and eat three-quarters of a shoe.

But here’s the beautiful bit: we can learn calm. It’s not magic. It’s habit. Repetition. Routine. You doing the same things over and over again until I go, “Oh, this again. Alright.”

Trainer Tips: Daily Habits That Help

1. Predictability is Power
Keep morning routines consistent. Feed me, walk me, give my Porkie Pie calming support — same order, same time. That builds security. I know what’s coming. (And what’s not.)

2. Create a “You’re-Gone” Ritual
Special chew toy. Calming supplement. Radio on. Scented shirt in my bed. Every time you leave, these comforts = you still love me. Pair it with a calming Porkie Pie treat and suddenly? Your absence feels manageable.

3. Start Small, Build Big
Leave for 2 minutes. Come back. Then 5. Then 10. I learn that you always return. It’s called gradual desensitisation, but I call it “peek-a-boo with snacks.”

Good Habits = Long-Term Calm

Don’t wait until I’ve chewed the couch arm to act. Anxiety prevention is like brushing your teeth — best done before there's a cavity (or in my case, a furniture massacre).

Porkie Pie’s Stress Support treats are a simple habit that supports my nervous system. Natural, vet-formulated, and gentle enough for daily use. They’re like a cup of chamomile tea — if tea tasted like fish.

Build the habit now, while I’m calm — and it’ll help when life gets wobbly.

Porkie Pie’s Goodbye Checklist

Before you leave, tick this off:

  • Calming supplement given (treat form = bonus points)
  • Safe space set up (bed, crate, or my secret hidey-hole)
  • Soothing background noise (classical? ABC Kids Radio? I’m not picky)
  • A chew or enrichment toy (make it a good one!)
  • Quick, calm goodbye — no dramatic farewells, please

Trainer Tip: Don’t only give the calming stuff when you leave. Mix it into regular days too — so I don’t start associating the tasty treat with emotional abandonment.

From the Fluffy Heart of Porkie Pie

Look, I get it. Life is busy. But every habit you build — every daily supplement, every calm exit, every tiny predictable moment — teaches me I’m safe, even when you’re not in the room.

That’s what the Good Habits Club is all about:
Tiny rituals that make a big difference.
Not just for my body. But for my brave little heart, too.
